Podcast

Discussing strategies and tools that educators can use to identify the function of children’s behaviours and teach new skills to replace challenging behaviour.

This podcast follows on from Marina’s presentation in our Webinar series Hot topics in inclusion and discusses how to identify the function behind children’s challenging behaviours and how to support them so they are better able to self-regulate. Marina answers the following questions:

  1. Can you describe some useful behaviour observation tools? Could you give us an example of when educators have used one of these to identify the function of a child’s behaviour and meet a child’s needs.
  2. Do you have any advice about what to do if educators have been unsuccessful in identifying why a behaviour is occurring?
  3. The term “backward chaining” is sometimes used in positive behaviour support. Can you explain what this is and how educators can use this teaching strategy?
  4. What are the 3 key messages you would like educators to take away in relation to this area of inclusion?
  5. What would be one practical step you could recommend educators implement in their practice?
